Page 16:16Photoelectric SensorsPerformance spectrumQuerying the size and content of containersThe retroreflective sensor (1) indicates the presence of the box. Thepulse duration can be used to count or measure box lengths. The diffuse sensor (2) with background suppression checks thecontents of the box. Its range is adjustable.Checking stack heightThrough-beam light sensors that consist of a emitter and receivercan be installed one on top of the other. Each through-beam sen-sor then scans a specific stack height. The accuracy of the scan iswithin a few millimeters, if apertures are used.Tracking a hoistThe through-beams are assigned so that the uppermost metal plateinterrupts the light beam. The beam path is open when the metalplate is removed for processing. The through-beams provide aswitching signal, and the hoist is automatically reset to the height ofa metal plate.

Page 17:17■ www.balluff.comPhotoelectric SensorsPerformance spectrumScanning a read markIn order to recognize a reading mark, a base unit and plastic fiberoptics are used. This way a mark – such as a bright line – can bescanned on a dark background, as occur on belts, hoses or contain-ers.Checking drill breakageUsing a through-beam light sensor with double-slotted apertures,a drill breakage check can be carried out from 2 m away. Drillslarger than approx. 2 mm diameter can be checked this way. If evensmaller drills (down to 1 mm Ø) have to be checked, then a laserthrough-beam sensor can be used.Detecting small partsWith an optical adapter such as the BOS 18-PK-1, small parts canbe measured and the background simultaneously suppressed. In this way, with a sensing distance of up to 13 mm, for example, fibers with a diameter of 0.05 mm can be queried, where the colorplays a subordinate role. Diffuse sensors with background suppres-sion enable larger ranges.Detecting a grooveTo sense a groove on a bear-ing pillow, a diffuse sensor isadjusted using a fiber opticcable so that the bearing pillowis reliably detected. The grooveinterrupts the beam (no reflec-tion), and the switch changes itsoutput condition.PhotoelectricSensorsPerformanceSpectrumProductOverviewPhotoelectricSensorsPhotoelectricSensors withSpecial Proper-tiesPhotoelectricDistanceSensorsfor AnalogDistanceMeasurementAccessories forPhotoelectricSensors

Page 18:18Recognizing differentdiametersIn order to be able to recognizedifferent shaft diameters, a dif-fuse sensor with backgroundsuppression (HGA) is used insuch a manner that it switcheswith large diameters. Small di-ameters, on the other hand, aresuppressed as "background" sothat the sensor does not switch.Querying packaging contentsA through-beam sensor is used in order to query the content of apackage (e.g., bandages). To do so, the emitter and receiver arearranged so that the light beam goes through the packaging. If thepackaging is empty, the light is sufficient to light up the receiver. Ifit is filled, the packaging contents interrupt the emitter's light beam, and the sensor switches.Checking sagTwo through-beam sensors can be used to control the positioningof a roller conveyor. In addition, the through-beams are arrangedabove each other so that at optimum slack, the lower light beam isclear and the upper beam interrupted. If both light beams are clear, more roll tension is needed. If both are interrupted, there is too muchmaterial (slack) present.Querying fill level in transparent containersDuring the fill level query in a transparent container (cylinder), adiffuse sensor with fiber optics is used as a through-beam sensor. If no liquid is at the sensor height, the light beam is not broken, sothat it hits the receiver. If enough fluid is available, the light beamis deflected away from the receiver. The switch changes its outputcondition.Photoelectric SensorsPerformance spectrum

Page 19:19■ www.balluff.comPositioning partsIn order to correctly position pivoted parts, its groove can bescanned. A laser sensor with background suppression is calibratedso that it recognizes the surface of the pivoted part. If the light beamstrikes the slot, the light is reflected back to the sensor at a differ-ent angle. The switch recognizes this as a background signal andignores it, i. e. changes its switching state.Checking the level: Granular material in small packagesMultiple sensors simultaneously check the content of a wholeseries of small packages on a conveyor belt.In addition, the user can shorten the plastic fiber optics to the de-sired length. Its standard length is 2 m.Checking the quality of workpiecesMultiple sensors with fiber optic attachments simultaneously checkdifferent features of a workpiece.Only if all drill holes, screws, dimensional accuracies, surface quali-ties etc. are present may the workpiece be processed further. Laterfailures and downtime are thus avoided.Detecting the bead of a camshaftTo detect whether a bead is present, a diffuse sensor with fiberoptics is used. This fiber optic is arranged on a level parallel to thecamshaft. If a bead is present on the camshaft, the light beam isinterrupted. With no bead, the beam path is free.Photoelectric SensorsPerformance spectrumPhotoelectricSensorsPerformanceSpectrumProductOverviewPhotoelectricSensorsPhotoelectricSensors withSpecial Proper-tiesPhotoelectricDistanceSensorsfor AnalogDistanceMeasurementAccessories forPhotoelectricSensors

Page 20:20Sorting partsIn order to be able to sort parts of various heights, a through-beamsensor is used. To do so, a teach-in process is used so that tallerparts interrupt the light beam and can be sorted out. The quick andsecure teach-in enables quick adaptation to changed conditions.Checking threadsPrior to assembling nuts, acheck needs to be made todetermine whether a thread ispresent or not. If the thread ispresent, they will reflect the lightback to the fiber optics and thesensor will operate. If the thread is missing, there willbe a total reflection on the blankwall of the drill hole, and as aresult, no light will be reflected tothe fiber optics. The sensor doesnot switch.Checking packagingIn order to check whether a packaging is correctly closed, a through-beam sensor is configured so that the light beam runs just above thepackaging. If it is not correctly closed, the obstructing lid interruptsthe light beam, and the through-beam sensor signals it.Counting transparent bottlesTransparent objects absorb onlya little light. In order to measurethem accurately, retroreflectivelight sensors with small hyster-esis are best suited. Throughtheir teach-in-buttons, the sen-sors can additionally be set veryeasily, and their configurationcan be changed even when theprocess is running. Unnecessarydowntimes are thus preventedeasily.Photoelectric SensorsPerformance spectrum
